Waiting on Wednesday (29)

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Hello and Happy Wednesday everyone!!! :)
I am so excited about my pick this week. I am dying to read it and so happy to share my obsession over it with YOU! haha

Dance Of Shadows by Yelena Black

Dance of Shadows (Dance of Shadows, #1)

Vanessa Adler isn’t so sure she really belongs at the School of American Ballet. But dance runs in her family. It’s been a part of her life for as long as she can remember. Her grandmother and mother were prima ballerinas, and her older sister Margaret was, too. That is, until Margaret mysteriously disappeared from school three years ago. Vanessa is heir to the family’s gift and the only person who can fulfill her sister’s destiny. She has no choice.
But she never could have guessed how dangerous the school is. The infamous choreographer, Josef, isn’t just ruthless with his pupils, he guards a sinister secret, one in which the school’s dancers—prized for their beauty, grace, and discipline—become pawns in a world of dark, deadly demons.

I am such a huge fan of books that bring you into the world of dance and performing arts. I think it's because I've always wanted to be a dancer! I'm just way too lazy! haha But oh how I'd love to be long, lean and graceful. *sighs* Anyways, back to the book... The cover is seriously amazing!!! I would totally frame it! And the story sounds amazing! I love how there's something dark and sinister to it that makes it totally different from the other books on the market. Can't wait to curl up with this on a stormy night! Eeeek!

Look for this to release on November 27 from Bloomsbury.

What books are you looking forward to reading? I'd love to know, so leave me a comment! :)

Through To You by Emily Hainsworth

Through To You
Camden Pike has been grief-stricken since his girlfriend, Viv, died. Viv was the last good thing in his life: helping him rebuild his identity after a career-ending football injury, picking up the pieces when his home life shattered, and healing his pain long after the meds wore off. And now, he’d give anything for one more glimpse of her. But when Cam makes a visit to the site of Viv’s deadly car accident, he sees some kind of apparition. And it isn’t Viv.

The apparition’s name is Nina, and she’s not a ghost. She’s a girl from a parallel world, and in this world, Viv is still alive. Cam can’t believe his wildest dreams have come true. All he can focus on is getting his girlfriend back, no matter the cost. But things are different in this other world: Viv and Cam have both made very different choices, things between them have changed in unexpected ways, and Viv isn’t the same girl he remembers. Nina is keeping some dangerous secrets, too, and the window between the worlds is shrinking every day.

As Cam comes to terms with who this Viv has become and the part Nina played in his parallel story, he’s forced to choose—stay with Viv or let her go—before the window closes between them once and for all.

Okay first of all, the cover to this book is absolutely haunting! Don't you agree? Okay..now on to the book itself! The story is pretty amazing! You guys know I have been in love with the TV show Awake and devistated that it got cancelled. This totally satisfied my need for more Awake/parallel universe's. It is similar in all the right ways, and different in all the right ways!

The character's are so multi-dimensional. They have one life, and one set of characteristic's, and then in their parallel universe...they are them! But...different! There are still things that are fundamentally the same, but yet they are their own seperate person too. That was so fascinating about this story. You thought you had the character's pegged, and then other aspect's of them were revealed in a parallel universe. Eeek!

I really liked Cam. He was broody, and sullen, then again, who wouldn't be? He was a bit lost, but the whole time your heart went out to him. He was a great guy, who was in a lot of pain. Nina was a total mystery to me. I loved that!  I was constantly guessing about her and enjoying reading on as layers to her character were revealed. And Viv seemed like a perfect dream that was too good to be true.

The first part of the book started off a little slow for me. But this gives us time to learn the back story and get to know the characters. I loved the ending to this book. Like whoa! It kept me totally riveted and gripping the pages. I was shocked and totally surprised. I can see why this book has already been optioned for film! Really great debut from Emily Hainsworth. I am looking forward to reading much more from her!

Review: Cursed

Cursed by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Release Date: September 18, 2012
Publisher: Spencer Hills Press
Pages: 312

Cursed

Dying sucks--and high school senior Ember McWilliams knows firsthand. After a fatal car accident, her gifted little sister brought her back. Now anything Ember touches dies. And that, well, really blows.

Ember operates on a no-touch policy with all living things--including boys. When Hayden Cromwell shows up, quoting Oscar Wilde and claiming her curse is a gift, she thinks he’s a crazed cutie. But when he tells her he can help control it, she’s more than interested. There’s just one catch: Ember has to trust Hayden's adopted father, a man she's sure has sinister reasons for collecting children whose abilities even weird her out. However, she’s willing to do anything to hold her sister's hand again. And hell, she'd also like to be able to kiss Hayden. Who wouldn't?

But when Ember learns the accident that turned her into a freak may not've been an accident at all, she’s not sure who to trust. Someone wanted her dead, and the closer she gets to the truth, the closer she is to losing not only her heart, but her life. For real this time.

I've always heard such amazing things about Jennifer Armentrout. Seriously, I think everyone who has read her is a fan girl. I guess I've just been too lazy to pick up any of her books. However, because of my obsession with Once Upon A Time, I am ALL over anything fairy tale-y. So when I heard about Cursed I squealed with delight! When it showed up at my door through an arc tour, I ripped open the package and read out loud to a captive audience. Namely, my bun Toby. He seriously sat there totally entranced by the story. But we'll talk more about that later...

Back to the story that is Cursed! I can totally see why Jennifer has such a huge following of devoted fans. Her writting is extrordinary! She has an amazing ability to weave a story that sucks you in. She makes you believe in her world and feel like your right in the middle of it! *sigh*

One thing that the author excels at, is writting her characters. They were incredible and unique! Ember was a complex yet strong heroine. I can't even imagine not being able to hug my family and friends. For me, there is nothing more comforting after a REALLY bad day ( you know that kind I'm talking about) and collapsing on the couch and crying into my Mom's shoulder as she wraps her loving arms around me. akdjflkdj; A life without that? Blasphemy! Sheer blasphemy! Okay, maybe not literally, but still! I don't think I could be as strong as Ember. Not being able to touch anyone, not having a Mom who is present, having to take care of her family. She was a strong kick butt heroine!

I loved Ember's sheer will power. She had this horrible curse, but yet she never gave up. She didn't let it handicap her. She perservered. As someone who struggles with a "curse" of poor health, it can be easy to just give up and quit fighting. Her strength, and her sheer will really encouraged me. No matter how sick I am, or how bad a day I am having, it could totally be worse! What if every person I touched died?

The infamous steamy love story that Armentrout is oh-so famous for was totally there! I'm not gonna get really into it, but WOW! I totally GET it now! The chemistry and sexual tension was incredible! Jennifer is a brilliant writer and I enjoyed this book tremendously!

If your a fan of dark fairy tales, or just a good romance, totally pick this one up!

On a side note, I've been pretty absent lately as you probably noticed. Life got kinda crazy but I'm trying to get myself back into the swing of things. While I had a blogging vacation I got an adorable Holland Lop rabbit that I named Toby. I am totally obsessed with his cute little face!

One of our favorite things to do is watch episodes of Lie to Me. We love our crime tv shows! hehe

As you can see....Toby is hooked!

I never would've thought it, but he has the same love for Cursed by Jennifer L. Armentrout that he has for Lie to Me!

Here Toby is curled up on the couch listening to me read aloud. I Could read for hours and he'd lay there totally entranced. And if I stopped he'd nudge me with his nose.

Here's a shot of him inching his way closer to me and lifting up his floppy ears to get a better listen.

That is one contented Toby! All we have to say is, we want MORE!!!

Have you read Cursed? Are you planning to? Let me know what you think in the comments!

Erasing Time by C.J. Hill
Release Date: August 28, 2012
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Pages: 368
Buy The Book: Amazon

Erasing Time
In this high-action and romantic futuristic adventure, there is no escape from the future for two contemporary girls pulled out of their own time.

When twins Sheridan and Taylor wake up 400 years in the future, they find a changed world: domed cities, no animals, and a language that’s so different, it barely sounds like English. And the worst news: They can’t go back home.

The twenty-fifth-century government transported the girls to their city hoping to find a famous scientist to help perfect a devastating new weapon. The moblike Dakine fights against the government, and somehow Taylor and Sheridan find themselves in the middle. The only way to elude them all is to trust Echo, a guy with secrets of his own. The trio must put their faith in the unknown to make a harrowing escape into the wilds beyond the city.

Full of adrenaline-injected chases and heartbreaking confessions, Erasing Time explores the strength of the bonds between twins, the risks and rewards of trust, and the hard road to finding the courage to fight for what you believe in.

I am quickly becoming a big fan of sci-fi and action thriller books. Which is beyond shocking to me. I seriously thought that NEVER would happen to me! Add that to the fact that I have always been fascinated by stories of twin's and this book was a total must read for me!

This review is really challenging for me, because I have really mixed views on it. While I love dystopian, sci-fi and time travel, (which this book has all 3 of!) it fell really flat for me. I was literally forcing myself to read this one. Normally I can finish a book in 2 or 3 days. This one took me over a week! Not because it was difficult to understand or hard to follow, simply because I had to force myself to read it.

Again, the plot itself had the markings for something really epic that would be a serious contender for my fave read of 2012. For me though, the plot somehow just didn't transfer onto the written page. It was slow, boring, and I really had to make myself finish it. In fact, if I weren't borrowing this one from a friend, I probably wouldn't have finished it at all.

Now here's where the mixed feelings come in. Around the last 60 pages the book really picked up and I really got into it! I wish the 300 pages before it had been more like it! But sadly they were not, and then...it ended. *sighs* So you can see my dilema! Right? It almost felt like 2 completely different books smushed together.

All in all I didn't enjoy this one, it was a little too slow paced for me. However, the ending of the book was much better for me, and I am curious about where the author will take this story in the next book!

Don't Turn Around

Sixteen-year-old Noa has been a victim of the system ever since her parents died. Now living off the grid and trusting no one, she uses her computer-hacking skills to stay safely anonymous and alone. But when she wakes up on a table in an empty warehouse with an IV in her arm and no memory of how she got there, Noa starts to wish she had someone on her side.

Enter Peter Gregory. A rich kid and the leader of a hacker alliance, Peter needs people with Noa’s talents on his team. Especially after a shady corporation threatens his life. But what Noa and Peter don’t realize is that Noa holds the key to a terrible secret, and there are those who’d stop at nothing to silence her for good.

Filled with action, suspense, and romance, this first book in a new trilogy offers readers nonstop thrills.

Okay, so I just finished reading this book and WOW! I really don't want to say too much, and spoil the plot for anyone. But what I will say is, this book was amaze-balls! Seriously, do yourself a solid and go buy it NOW!

This book grabbed my attention at the very beginning and never let me go. I was so engrossed in the story I felt like I was tangled up into the story right along with the characters! I was racing through the pages of the book to feel my way through the story to the end. My heart was pounding, my palms were sweating ( I know! Eww, totally gross!) and I jumped at every noise.

I am so excited that this book is going to be a trilogy because I want,  more! I NEED more! And REALLY soon!

Seriously though, all gushing aside, this is a phenominal story. The character's were well written. The plot was amazing! This book was full of thrilling action, suspense, romance and a crazy conspiracy or two!

Review: The Sweetest Spell

The Sweetest Spell by Suzanne Selfors
Release Date: August 21, 2012
Publisher: Walker & Company
Pages: 416
Buy The Book: Amazon

The Sweetest SpellEmmeline Thistle has always had a mysterious bond with cows, beginning on the night of her birth, when the local bovines saved the infant cast aside to die in the forest. But Emmeline was unaware that this bond has also given her a magical ability to transform milk into chocolate, a very valuable gift in a kingdom where chocolate is more rare and more precious than gold or jewels. Then one day Owen Oak, a dairyman’s son, teaches Emmeline to churn milk into butter—and instead she creates a delicious chocolate confection that immediately makes her a target for every greedy, power-hungry person in the kingdom of Anglund. Only Owen loves Emmeline for who she truly is, not her magical skill. But is his love enough to save her from the danger all around her?

In a departure from her contemporary teen romances, Suzanne Selfors crafts an irresistible re-imagined fairy tale that will tempt readers with a delicious story of love that is sweeter than the richest chocolate.

First of all, I love the cover to this book. It's totally  bewitching and I can't stop staring at it! The story was interesting but the character's really stood out to me in this one. The main character, Emmeline was the under dog. She was an "unwanted" because of her disfigured foot, and was looked down upon because of this. Most people didn't look at her or speak to her. But boy did things change when people found out she had an extremely rare talent!

I think if I were Emmeline I would've been extremely depressed, and always questioning if people liked me for me, or my gift of making chocolate. That totally wasn't the case with her. She was good natured and had a wonderful attitude. She was definitely much more gracious and kind than I would've been !

Owen, sigh, Owen, Owen, Owen! What can I say about him? He is the ultimate knight in shining armor! He was loving, gracious, sweet and caring. He was someone Emmeline could totally be herself with! They had a wonderful and unique bond and their relationship is by far my favorite part of this story!

There were parts I found cute and entertaining, like "the husband market" where woman go once a year to purchase a husband. They would save their coin all year in hopes of purchasing the most handsome man in the land. This totally cracked me up! I'm totally glad we don't have to purchase a husband, if we did it'd be a loooong wait! My coin intake is pretty small! haha

Overall I enjoyed this book and really liked it! It's not one of my fave's but I still found it enjoyable. I think maybe fantasy just isn't my genre, but I haven't read too many so I'll have to check out a few more before I make a final decision on that.
